What do we mean when we say environment?

Creating a beautiful environment for you and your guests is goal number one, but behind that is an equally important goal of having as minimal of an impact on our collective environment as possible.

How do we do this?

First, we compost!

We work with the locally owned Earth Care Farm in Charlestown, RI and take all of our green waste there to be turned into rich, nourishing compost. This means separating all of the organic debris from cleaning and designing before we set-up your event, as well as carefully deconstructing all of the arrangements after the party ends. Green waste, in our case flowers and foliages, that ends up in landfills is a major producer of greenhouse gasses as it cannot properly decompose in the anaerobic conditions present in a landfill.

What does this look like in action? On average, we collect about 16 30-gallon lawn bags worth of organic compostable materials from one event. As a bonus, every year we buy back finished compost to add to the gardens around Fig & Squill - enriching our own soils and helping support the plants we snip from.

Second, we do not use any flower ‘foods’ or preservatives

All such commercially produced products are toxic to aquatic life and have warning labels that advise against dumping down drains. It may seem like a small thing, but we work on an antique property and off of a well, so what we dump is what we eventually pull back up. We simply use soap, water, and elbow grease to keep our vessels, tools, and workspace clean, which in turn keeps the flowers happy.

Third, we love not using floral foam.

Floral foam is the green colored foam used for designing that is very prevalent in the event industry. It is petroleum based, non-biodegradable, and is known to cause cancer. There is not a foam-free solution to every design concept, but if having a foam-free celebration is important to you and you can be a bit flexible in your vision, please let us know!

If beautiful design and green practices are important to you too, please say hi!
